Internet Explorer won't detect existing network

Ok....
Windows Update had new drivers for my Hercules Game Theatre sound card so I went to install them....
From when I installed them sound card didn't work anymore....
So I went to install the old drivers and when I ran the install it said you can't be connected to the internet while the drivers are installing....
So I disabled Local Area Connection installed the drivers, enabled LAC again and restarted....
Well then the s**t hit the fan....

LAC was there and had the proper address, the sound card wasn't working, and IE and programs like MSN Messenger and Weatherbug brought up Dial-Up networking dialog....
Messed around with drivers some more and I got the sound card working again....

The network problem is still there....Firefox and Eudora work just fine without any problems, but Internet Explorer and Weatherbug and MSNM want to dial a connection and don't detect the existing one....if I connect to my work VPN it works just fine.....

I just remember that System Restore might help but I am not at home to try it out....
I did not create a system restore point before doing all this so I don't know if Windows did it automatically...

Please help....appreciated very much!
