Internet Explorer option missing from Customize Desktop > Desktop Items choices

We have been getting some new HP workstations with XP Pro on them. Normally I add the built in Internet Explorer icon to peoples desktop. But when I go to Display Properties > Customize Desktop > Desktop Items, the Internet Explorer check box is not even there.

The link below shows how it looks when it is there.

I have gotten around it for now by using Tweak UI for XP to add the icon, but would like to get it added back into where it normally is so all users can access this choice.

I have looked at the group policy and I did not find it there. I have tried to do some comparing of registries with systems that have the choice, but have not decyphered the difference yet.

Any ideas?

Eldergeek image of what should be there

You do not have the Internet Explorer box Checked in that Image.
It should be if you want that Icon on the Desktop at all times.
You can also add the icon to the Programs list

The link is only an picture of what should be there, which I found on Eldergeek to use as an example.

On the systems that I'm talking about, the Internet Explorer box is gone.

redbeard ... Now that I understand your issue I was able to locate a fix.

Turns out the November MS updates were a bit screwy

Add-remove-program (select show updates)

Uninstall KB943460

This one is causing the problem.

WOW! That did it.

Where did you find that tidbit. I've had another isssue with that same update, but it was for an odd program that used an uncommon database.

Thanks

Hmmm...

I must have been ahead of that posting when I was doing doing my searching, because I tried all sorts of variations of similar wording when I was trying to find the fix.

I searched with google with this: ie check box missing from display properties

An interesting response from MS on that page.

I had spoken confirmation from MS

Assessment

No solution for it because this is a known issue
Problem will be solved with SP3 or hopefully sooner
Asked customer to uninstall the update and wait until SP3 comes out or a new
update for this known issue
