The article is a little misleading IMO. For example, first they say:
The craziest part: Windows users don’t ever even have to open the now-obsolete web browser for malicious actors to use the exploit. It just needs to exist on their computer.
And then a little further down, they say:
To initiate the exploit, a user simply needs to open an attachment received by email, messenger, or other file transfer service.

Not opening questionable attachments has always been the first golden rule of prevent malware / viruses / exploits. While it's likely that Microsoft will release a security update to fix this latest exploit, if users still open questionable attachments, they're going to have a bad time. ;)
