Internet Explorer 6

I did a quick forum search and didn't see anything relating to this, so i'll go ahead and ask. I'm using Windows 2000 and i had updated to IE6 awhile ago, not realizing i hadn't installed service pack 2 yet. So i reinstalled SP2 and everything is gravy; AVP2 plays again. Then IE6 starts acting up, and at first i think i am just unable to run two browser windows without IE freezing (however, only the parent window is "not responding", yet both are frozen), then i find out i can run two instances if i manually open both, but pop-ups and links that open a new window cause IE to freeze. I didn't feel like troubleshooting this, so i thought i'd just uninstall IE6 and reinstall 5.5, which works just fine. Lo and behold, the uninstall IE option from Add/Remove programs was removed, apparently by installing SP2. Windows has a message that the "Windows 2000 Service Pack team no longer recommends reinstalling Service Pack 2." Despite the fact that that is a ridiculous recommendation, this was my first time installing SP2 on this instance of Windows 2k. So i move on, trying the w2kexcp.exe /u trick, which only uninstalls the windows html display engine, taunting me with the fact that i can run IE and check the about (telling me that it is still in fact IE6), yet i am unable to see any HTML, even the stuff integrated into window (My Computer, etc.). Rebooting changed nothing. I was left with one more choice, i'd simply do a reinstall of Windows. So I pop in the CD, and run the whole In-Windows reinstall thing (with SP2 on, the CD thinks it's version is newer). However, i soon get the error that setup was unable to create a temp folder. That's okay, in-windows installation has never worked. So i reboot and try and boot from the Win2k CD, as always (since i've reinstalled 2k quite often). Going through the prompts, i realize that there IS no reinstall in the boot from CD setup, though i could have sworn i'd done it before. All i had was install a new copy or repair the old one, which i doubt would actually reinstate IE 5.5 files.

So here's the actual question. How can i a) remove IE6 and reinstall IE5.5 (optimally not losing my OE messages etc.) or b) reinstall Windows, to get IE 5.5 back?

What a moron. You are obviously quite a n00b. Your problem is IE--so don't use it. Try Opera. Mozilla. Netscape, even.

Idiot.

as for theprobbka. there's no reason to be such an a$$hole to someone just for asking a question which i (and i'm sure i'm not alone) think is quite valid.

Just to try and keep this thread on-topic, probbka is a friend of mine from school, so just ignore him.

If you believe IE6 is your problem, goto:
Start, Setings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Microsoft IE 6

At this point you have the option of either repairing (bleh) or reverting to the earlier edition of IE you had installed. If it matters any, I'm running NT 4.0 and IE 6 messed up bad.. gave several nasty errors after reboot that it couldn't find several files.. Seems you aren't at your best till you get your fix from MS.

Good luck w/ your troll as well.

You can't uninstall Internet Explorer from Windows. Remember the whole Microsoft-taken-to-court thing? Yeah, that.

anyway...

Repair Internet Explorer first. That's the obvious option. If it gets fixed, you still have IE6. If that doesn't work, go back to 5.5 by reverting it back.

Well I know my original description was long so you guys may not have read it, but i am completely unable to uninstall IE6. Yes, you can uninstall it (the only thing thats truly tied to Windows is the HTML display engine), but that option has been destroyed by errors from all the programs that should do it. IEradicator doesn't support Win2k SP2, so that's gone. I have tried a repair by invoking a program with a few dll calls by a run command found from microsoft, however the repair failed to...repair. The uninstall and revert options in that window are grayed out, and I have yet to figure out how to run the program to get to those options.
