Internet Explorer 6 mysteriously stopped working

I run Windows XP with all the latest updates. I remember using IE6 the last time around a week ago; I mostly use Mozilla. I just noticed that IE6 won't work AT ALL. Whenever I click a link or type in an address and hit ENTER, nothing happens. The status bar shows no activity...no nothing. Hitting Escape shows the "Action Canceled" screen.

The weird thing is: if I type a web-address in My Computer or any Windows folder, it works absolutely fine (the Windows Folder interface switches to and loads the IE toolbars and stuff)! But if I set IE as my default browser and an external program launches it (i.e. clicking on 'view profile' or 'new e-mail' in Yahoo Messenger) I still get the blank page.

What really bugs me is that I haven't made any system-wide changes in the past few weeks i.e. haven't installed any new software or anything that has anything to do with network or system settings etc. I tried deleting all WinSock entries and adding new ones but that didn't work. I have no viruses, trojans, malware....nothing. Zilch.

I don't really need IE...I am just curious how to get it to work. Any help appreciated. And yes, I haven't tried installing the IE7 Beta yet.

XP System Restore. Set it back a few days and you should be all set. Please don't say "I turned off System Restore"!

Lol, I told you not to say that (said in the Maxell Smart voice). Ok, the obligatory lecture...I'm not sure why people turn this feature off. With the size of today's hard drives, the disk space that System Restore would use shouldn't be an issue. It's been a lifesaver for me the few times I've needed it.

Ok, off the soapbox. Now, back to the issue at hand. Try this:

Click Start.

Click Run

In the Run box, type (no quotes) "sfc /scannow" and hit enter.

Note that there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow".

A small box should come up on your screen. It's the "System File Checker". It will show you a progress bar while it checks your system to make sure all your system files are correct. And YES, it does account for all service pack and hot fix updates, so no worries about it copying older files, EVEN IF IT ASKS FOR A CD.

It won't tell you what it's done or what it's found. It will just disappear off your screen when it's done checking. Will probably take several minutes to go through its checking.

Once you see it disappear. reboot. See if IE is good to go.
