Internet Explorer 6 can't download w/o using "save target as..."

If I click on a link to a file I need to download, Internet Explorer 6 takes me to a blank page with the little broken link symbol instead of prompting me to download.

I can download fine if i right click on the link and do a "save target as" but this can get annoying after a while.

Anyone have experience with this problem? Thanks in advance.

BTW, I was running Win2k when I upgraded to IE6 but now I'm running XP.

For me, I cant even download when I do "Save Target As". I get the dialog box with the flying paper, and it just gets stuck there.

In Win XP and IE6 I selected to Save Target and it worked perfectly. No problems. If that does not work in your computer maybe you have a corrupted Internet Explorer?

Yeah, I understood what you said, just that I cant download in either case (left click or right click then Save Link As). It was working for a while when I had IE6, then stopped working one day.

can you provide a specific example? does it happen with the movie here?

also, to be completely unhelpful, how about giving mozilla a shot? tabbed browsing is a great feature.

I can walk you through it. But I need to know first what ext. formats does it have the problems with? Exsample: It does it only when I'm trying to download a zip file.

well, i solved this problem this morning.
i used the instructions at microsoft to reinstall internet explorer 6 in windows xp (basically go into the registry and change the values from 1 to 0).
the first time it didn't work, but i tried again and it ended up working. but then i started getting all these random error messages in outlook that i found out were all connected to errors caused by internet explorer.

i finally decided to do a clean reinstall of xp and now i'm running fine. thank you all for trying to help me.
i hope you other guys with similar problems find a solution too.
