tried a search and no joy. hope you guys can lend a hand here. IE 5.5 started hanging on me a coup'la months ago, and i finally got fed up and did a full format and partition ( i do it semi-annually anyway). after dl'ing all the critical updates i started browsing around the net to test it out. everything seemed ok for awhile. so i dl'd a bunch of driver, app and utility updates and that went well. i went to gamespy to download a game patch and that's when things went bad again. so, i installed IE 6.0 hoping that it would resolve the hanging issue, but it did'nt help. anyone know of a specific cause for this problem right off-hand?
i'm headed to microsoft support files and be back in about 10 mins. hope you all can help me. thanks. :)

If your PC is freezing regularly, and you are on PPPoE, your computer may be looking around for a DHCP server that does not exist. Check the following: (windows)

Open control panel

Open Network

Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL and VPN type bindings).

Select it and press properties

Select IP address from the tab

Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively
This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".

Thanks your fix worked for me. I was having sluggish internet connection. You would click on something and what seemed like minutes passed before you would be taken there. Now after applying your fix. Bam works great. And your fixed worked in ME and XP Pro.

Thanks Again

hiya bacillus, nice to see sharpedge got a fix from your advice. as for me, i did'nt mention that my rig is on a LAN with 3 other pc's and a lappy in various states of build that i'm working on when i have the time and the mood hits me. the freeze is specific to this one rig that i mentioned, as the others on the LAN aren't suffering same. other rigs have win2k and winxppro on them. they're connected by a linksys router and a linksys wireless for my lappy split off the router. well, my limited networking knowledge is the stumbling block toward utilizing your adivce to good advantage. so when i set up the ip as you suggested i couldn't get connected at all to the net on that affected rig so i removed the ip and subnet and then i could get online again. i ran a mini lan party playing battlezone2 fe, mechwarrior 4, medal of honor, etc. for a few hours on 3 pc's and the games ran as well as they're programmed to using tcp/ip and ipx/spx. the setup is peer all around.
one thing i did notice is that the hangs a predominantly occuring at a few specific but non-related sites. the hangs would for the most part occur consistently at the same moment of execution of certain requests (ie: page changes especially, but also requests for downloads and links, and rarely will it hang (but does) with a page up but static.) well, i hope this narrows down the possible issues that might be causing the hangs. and thanks again for your help. :)

edit* oops, sorry sharpedge, spelled your name wrong.
