Just wondering what laws are currently about as to govern how much companies can do to monitor employees use of the internet and email...am in UK but would appreciate insight, US laws on this too.

Such as, is it legal to use something like a sniffer to monitor the internet usage of a particular employee?

Yes definetly legal as long as the employer tells the employee he is doing the monitoring. It is defintely a good thing cause I have seen people who surf the internet all day and read email sale flyers all day.

That type of action is usually included in network use policies and the like. No need to walk over to Bob and tell him anyone is monitoring his browsing habits. And hell, I don't think an employer should have to tell the employees what he is doing with his network.

Yeah I was thinking that it was...and yeah I pretty much agree that it should be.

I heard the IT girl at my temp job saying she was going to use sniffers if the internet activity didn't go down....well I surf the net for half of the day doing non-work stuff but I have been told I can....because there is only half a job for me but they want me in all day...doesn't bother me...I still get paid.
