Internet Domain Name's driving me insane!

About three years ago I registered a domain name through PS-Kotech. I think they are a Canadian based company. Anyway, I checked and I am the registrant for this domain name. Also, the domain name is registered through June 2004 (as it should be because I last renewed it last June). I got some nonsense email from PS-Kotech saying I owed a yearly registration fee in January, which I don't ever recall having to pay for before.

Currently I'm using PS-Kotech to redirect to an old School account I have that will be deleted soon, so I'm in the market to have my domain name hosted. I'd also like to transfer the domain name to a more reputable company, keeping myself as the registrant. How do I do this? Also, why do I have to use someone else to register my domain name if it's in my name?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a good host at something around $15 a month? I'm not worried about space, 400MB is enough for me. I just want it hosted through a reputable company, and there are so many out there I don't even know what I'm paying for when I look at some of them

Thank you for any advice.

I have a dedicated box at dedicatednow.com, I'll give you 400mb for $10/mo. It's very stable, I can even put in some custombuilds if you need em. *

Edit: You can probably get better deals, Rossman will tell you. This, however, is a dedicated server, so my price = big. Plus you know who to bitch at if there's problems. :)

I think pretty much everyone here would recommend godaddy.com for the registering. As for hosting, there are so many place to do that....

My number one priority right now is to renew my registration on the name through a different service. I trust that since godaddy is recommended that they are reputable and will register the domain name in my name and not "hijack" it.

Pardon me if I sound naive, but I've heard so many horror stories about people losing control of their domain names. I just want to get this one registered in my name for the long term, and then focus on getting the hosting problem straightened out.

thanks again if you can provide me with any more info.

Most of the horror stories you'll hear about are from people allowing their *host* to register their domain and once they decide to leave that particular host, they find it difficult to get access to their domain.

GoDaddy is most definately trustworthy and very easy to deal with. I wouldn't use anyone else.

I love their support. Took about 2-3 minutes to get to a live person.
