does anybody have experience with a software based internet porn filter? I'm looking for something to be used only on one machine, I'm not really wanting to pay a subscription or buy additional hardware. Does anybody have either good or bad experiences with software based filters? I'm hesitant to buy something like internet guard dog because my past experiences are that they block everything from google to microsoft.com, but I haven't used any software like that for several years, it's got to be better now. I had filtering through my ISP but it was chronically slow and would occasionally filter out stuff that wasn't objectionable with out any password override.

Well, I've been using Norton Internet Security and its parental controls to keep the kids from getting into internet sites that aren't good for them (e.g. porn). Of course, these are driven by site lists that need to be regularly updated to be (reasonably) effective. This means you'll have to be willing to pay a yearly subscription.

The content filter in I.E. is very easily corrupted and starts blocking even internet connections. I couldn't possibly count high enough to tell you how many calls I got while working for several broadband ISPs where the content filter became corrupted and started blocking absolutely everything. Fixing it is a beyotch. Personally, I'd go with a 3rd party filtering program like NetNanny or Norton Internet Securities for the parental controls.
