you don't have to have the WWW., it's just easily remembered. for instance my domain is v2d.us, my web server is named www so it resolves it's dns to www.v2d.us.

duh, I'm saying that the owner of the server doesn't have to name thier server www, I could change the name of my server to bobwehaddababyitsaboy if I wanted to, but who the crap would remember that?

edit: for instance forums is the name of anandtechs forum server, their domain is anandtech.com hence you get forums.anandtech.com, if you where to type www.anandtech.com youd get there server named www, and thier domain to get www.anandtech.com.
