Internet connection turns on PC

Whenver I turn off my computer my ethernet connection seems to turn it back on. I don't have this problem if I put my computer in standby mode, only if I hibernate or turn it off. I had this problem before and managed to fin some setting in XP that solved it, but since then my HDD has crashed and been rebuilt and I can't remeber where the setting is. Any ideas?

Try the BIOS, under power management. There are often settings to enable/disable wake on lan (WOL). Good luck.

How do you know that Network connection tuned it On?

In reality it usually the opposite. LAN traffic would get it easly out of Standby, to start from Hibernation, or Off (which is basically the same),you need special configuration and special magic packet.

I know that it's not in the BIOS because that hasn't changed. All that happened was I rebuilt my system drive. I know it's my network connection because if I unplug the ethernet cable it doesn't do it. I may sound crazy, but I have found this setting once before and it fixed it. It's buried in XP somewhere, I just can't remember where.

maybe under the device properties /hardware settings page?

/id be clearer, but im not near a windows machine to look

sound like the Wake on Lan feature. such a feature would only be enabled through the BIOS, not windows.

Either way, disabling WOL in the BIOS should still fix the problem. It's alot easier than searching through hundreds of setting options in Windows. Even if it doesn't fix it (unlikely), you'll have wasted, what, one minute?

It can be enabled/disabled from both places. Disabling it in the bios would solve the problem also.

In device manager, right click on the network card and choose properties, then within the advanced tab of the card there should be an option for the wake on lan feature. If you never want this to occur, the best place to disable it is in the bios.
