Is it possible to share the same phone line w/ just ICS enabled on both computers and an Ethernet cable connecting the two? Or is there hardware involved? Any particular type of Ethernet cable? Also, would having two PC's on the same phone line affect connectivity, ping, etc.? -kd5-

yes,you can do it with a cat5 crossover cable and ICS.That works on only two shared peer to peer computers.Only one needs to have ICS(or Win98SE) installed. That acts as the server. It should have the modem installed init and then you need a nic in both the computers.

To hook two computers up through ethernet without a hub you will need a special cable called a crossover cable. If you use a hub then normal cables will do. You can share a dialup connection with ICS by putting a NIC in the computer connected to the dial up modem and a NIC in the other computer. ICS is only enabled on the host computer(the one connected to the modem). Everytime you need to connect to the internet, you will have to go to the host computer and dial-in (you might be able to have this done automatically, not sure though). You only have a limited amount of bandwidth, so this is split between all computers connected.

If you have more questions, this might get more responses over in networking.

If you have 56k dial up,it will be halved when both computers try and activate a serch or web hit at the same time. If youhad 3 puters on ICS,it would be cut in 1/3 if all three puters tried to access a page at the same time. Try not to have more than 8 puters on ICS. Things start to fallapart at that point, and a nice linux server is good to have then.

Thanks! I appreciate the assistance.

BTW Mapidus, I always found that I stand a better chance of actually getting a response, quickly, here at OT. Anytime I ever posted a question anywhere else, the responses were few and far between.....

Besides, OT is my home away from home:eek: -kd5-
