Two Dell laptops, both running Vista Home Premium.
One modem, plugged in via usb and one cross over
cable.

I can't share the internet connection between the
two.
Any help/suggestion would be great.

Thanks.

I too always recommend against using a Cable Modem via the USb port. It just limits your expandability.

You can get routers for next to nothing if you find a sale or rebate.

Pick one up, plug it into the cable mode, plug the PCs into it and you'll be off and running.

Can't help with Vista as I don't use it and don't know if it's the same as XP for networking.

This was the first Google link when I search for: Internet connection sharing vista...

Maybe a little late here, but where does the assumption come from that the modem on usb must be a broadband one
of the cable or dsl type.

In my case, I am stuck on dial up, and if you want to set up ICS with dial up, a router is just a start in the expenses because you need an expensive and now hard to find dial up modem that plugs into the router. But if you have two computers running XP or vista, both with built in net works ports, just one dial up modem, you can be ICS networked for the cost of a crossover cable. In my case $18.00 for a sixty foot one. While I am waiting and waiting and waiting to get dsl availability from AT&T. And since I have zero need to ever network more than two computers, what do I need a router for?
