internet connection sharing disables file and printer sharing

I recently bought a wireless network adapter for my desktop system and tried to set up an ad-hoc network with my laptop (which has a built-in adapter) using the instructions at http://www.microsoft.com/windo.../bowman_02april08.mspx

It sounds simple. It should've been simple. But something's wrong. When I enable internet connection sharing on my desktop's ethernet adapter (connected to a DSL modem/router via a switch), I can wirelessly connect to the desktop from the laptop, I can ping the desktop, and I can access shared resources on the desktop from the laptop. But the laptop can't access the internet.

That's the first problem. The second problem is that if I disable the wireless connection and reconnect the laptop to the ethernet, the laptop can access the internet again, but it can't access any shares on the desktop. In fact, the desktop no longer even appears in the workgroup. But, the desktop can still access shares on the laptop. Weird. The only way to get the desktop's shares to be visible from the laptop is to disable internet connection sharing.

I checked the firewall exceptions on the desktop and file and printer sharing was enabled. That's as far as my network knowledge goes. And, I still have no idea why the laptop can't access the internet wirelessly.

Both systems are XP Pro SP3 with all updates.

Welcome to AnandTech Network Forum.

In addition, many Ad-Hoc connections are only WEP capable. I.e Not safe.

P.S. Did you notice the date:
