it didnt used to be like this.

i have cox cable..

i run waste occasionally... i was running it non-stop, and having no issues.. i ran it continuously for several days without issues. but anymore, it seems if i fire it up for just a little download, i get massive dropped packets or something, i have trouble connecting to the net, it's like my ISP has killed my bandwidth or something and also become about 6000 times buggier. i dont get it.

i reset the boxes, that didnt do anything. i rebooted all the machines on my network (cause they all were experiencing the problem) that didnt do anything. i checked online for a patch for XP, and i'm up to date, got all the critical updates and everything.

trillian and waste both run perfectly, but ftp and http connections have lots of trouble.

i dont understand it. what could be wrong? do i need to reset my boxes again? am i downloading too much?

There's really no useful information here. Do you run a router, ICS, or what? Have you tried connecting the cable modem directly to a single machine to see if it's an internal network issue, or an ISP related issue? I don't know of any download limitations on a normal cable account, and I've stressed my connection pretty significantly with downloads of Linux ISO files and the like, and it's never complained. :)

May be this can Help.

Download DrTCP: <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.dslre
ports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe">http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe</a>

Run the program, it will show the current settings of TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change to your original values.

Start with:

MaxMTU - for DSL =1492 Cable=1500 DialUp=576

Tcp Receive - 255552

Window Scaling - Yes

Time Stamping - No

Selective Acks - Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole - NO

Max Duplicate - 2

TTL - 64

Notice it said above Start with

These settings are not written in "stone" there is variability depending on the computer other setting. So try few setting and measure your Download for each setting.

In addition, in case a person has a Router the Router's MTU if set differently can affect the general MTU.

my cable account gives me either a 10 GB of transfer, or 30 GB of transfer. i dont remember which.

i havent stressed it.. this is happening to me today to, and it's completely independant of how much i stress it. it seems rather hit or miss. my messengers still work, though. odd.

every machine in the house has trouble. it's not an internal connection issue, my lan is solid, i've even reset the router to see if that was it, but alas, it wasnt. (we use a router and a few switches, and an entirely wired lan. the modem connects to the router, which connects to the switch, which in turn connects to all the network based items and the computers. i have a switch in my room, so i can see when information goes in or out of my system.

the net just seems to go out at random intervals. it'll be rock solid one minute, then i'll have to click 30 times on a link to get it to go through the next. it sucks.
