Internet connection problem. URGENT!

My family manages to screw up their computer once every week, and I am always left to fix it. This week, I get the gift of having no internet connection. I ran Norton Antivirus and removed a Trojan Dropper, and I ran Ad Aware which removed some programs. The modem definitely works, and in IPconfig it recognizes the router, etc and it shows that it is connected in the Network Neighborhood.

However, I still cannot connect to the internet. I remember having a similar problem with my old comptuer, and it involved resetting the TCP/IP settings. However, with WinXP, I do not know how to get to this settings page. Could anyone let me know how to do this? Or, if anyone has a different idea of how to get back on the internet, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

try looking in control panel, internet options, connections, settings, properties, networking, tcpip properties. You can change your address and server numbers here. hope this is what you are looking for.

OK, I got to the configuration page, but I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to do. I remember doing something with resetting some sort of TCP/IP settings, but I really do not recall. Does anyone know the procedure I am talking about that would fix my (family's) problem? Thanks.

You shouldn't to do anything in there. I assume you are using DHCP and do not need to assign individual addresses. You can try to repair your local network connection. Are you actually recieving an IP address?

What is this about how you "ran Norton Antivirus?" :) It should be running non-stop to start with, so it gets the first punch in against this stuff. Make it so. :) Set it to fetch updates automatically (daily if it allows you to specify how frequently) and enable Heuristics at maximum. No files should be exempt from scanning, and it should be set to scan within compressed files and every other option available. I'd also suggest jettisoning all the System Restore files (how to do that).

If you haven't tried turning your modem off and on again yet, try that. If that fails, call your ISP and ask if your account has been disabled (if your system was Trojan-infected, they might've done so).

You can try one of these fixes.

You could also try the "repair" option in XP. If you double click on that connection in the network connections, a window will pop up. Across the top of this is a tab labeled support, click that, and a box in the lower left corner will be labeled repair. The simple XP repair usually doesn't work, but it is worth a try.

Yes, Norton Antivirus does run constantly, but my sister simply tried to quarantine the file when it got recognized and did nothing after that. The file could not be quarantined and she left it alone. I deleted it later. However, this does not have anything to do with the problem.

Redbeard, I did the LSP fix and it didn't seem to do anything. Also, when I try to repair the connection in XP, it says that it does not use TCP/IP so it cannot be repaired, which is strange. ARGH!

If it were me, I'd chalk up the Windows installation as a loss and reinstall, it'll probably be faster. If it's WinXP Professional then you may want to invest the time to set up a Restricted User account for the family to use from here on, and reserve the Administrator privileges for yourself. An ounce of prevention... yeah. :) WinXP Home doesn't have that option, unfortunately. Good luck! :)

(btw, set Norton to kill on sight, no questions or prompts to the user)

You can try to uninstall the network card and let windows redetect it. Or you can try a windows XP repair of the OS. Of course, what you should do....

is format. It's fun.

OK, I found out that a couple ports on my router got busted from the huge thunderstorm a few days back. I have a new router coming from Newegg. Also, the USB and ethernet ports on my Dell 8100 (2nd family computer) seem to have gone out... so I am in the process of getting a new motherboard for that piece of junk. Thanks for all the help guys!
