Internet connection problem on laptop/Linksys Router

Details:

I have Windows XP on my inspiron 8200 laptop with a LAN internet connection via a Linksys router. I can connect online in Linux but not in Windows. The problem is that I can't even get a valid IP thru DHCP. Tried releasing/renewing IP, but it keeps giving me the IP address 169.254.221.180.

Also tried a static IP, no luck. It could only ping the router and other comps on the LAN with a static IP/DNS entry. Even tried reinstalling a network card driver. Also, I doubt it's the cable/router since I plugged in another box with the same cable and it worked.

Anyone know of possible remedies? If you need more information, just ask. Thanks a bundle.

Ouch, you're running into APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing). I think it lets Windows 2000/XP machines on the same subnet talk to each other when the dns server is down.
I'm assuming that you use the Linksys router as a DHCP server? Have you tried to give your computer a static IP with the Linksys not acting as a DHCP server?

If you can't even get it to work using a static IP, it sounds like it's either:

1) An OS / driver issue
2) Ethernet port
3) rj45 / cat5 cable
4) Port on router

You probably want to try the whole swap one piece by once piece mode of troubleshooting, until you can narrow down what the problem is.

If you are dual booting the machine and Linux works, then you know the hardware is fine so it's either a driver related issue or an OS issue.
