I'm a linux newbie and I've just installed slakware linux. I tried to set my internet connection up using the following steps:

-1st I tried linking the modem devices by entering;
# ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem
-then I ran "pppsetup" and filled in all my details
-and "ppp-go &" to connect.

This resulted in connect script error? I also tried to query the modem in KDE with the result "Modem busy"(or something along those lines). What do I do?
I've got a Rockwell 56k Data Fax modem (Is this a Winmodem), will I need to get specific drivers and if so where?
All help is appreciated, and a BIG THANK YOU in advance

Rockwell is the chipset manufacturer. Though it is likely that this is a winmodem.

What's the exact make and model?

The device manager in Windows lists the modem as a Rockwell HCF 56K Data Fax PCI modem, it also lists a modem enumerator.

So what are my options having a Winmodem? Can I change my linux flavor or do I have to change modems?

The only winmodems that have drivers that *I* know of are for Lucent based chipsets.

Then again I haven't looked into it much because I have DSL and an "old" USR voice/fax ISA modem, so I haven't done much digging on making a winmodem work in Linux.

Get the AOpen FM-56ITU ISA slot modem. It will work just fine for you as it's a hardware based modem. Got mine from Axiontech.com for about $40 (should be even less now).

Probably. ISA slots are *usually* black, at the bottom of the board, and slighty longer than PCI slots.

What's the board?
