"Internet connection not found" message with certain apps?

I get a message telling me that an internet connection cannot be found when running some of my apps. One of them is the Windows Update. When asked if I want to make a connection, I keep getting a message saying that I can't. I can access the internet via IE.
I am running Windows xp pro.

How can I check to see what the problem might be? Is there a way to check and repair any missing pieces of my internet connection protocol?

Are you using a firewall?
