Internet connection keeps hanging up?

could anyone explain why my internet connection keeps hanging up. my roommate has a wireless card and works fine, but the rest of us using cables have issues with it. I was thinking it was the cable but it worked fine in my old house. The only thing I can imagine is happening is interference with some outside signals. any suggestions ?
 
What kind of router? have you try updating the firmware, or changing the channel of the wireless network?, my router used to restart in channel 6 but channel 11 solved my problem
