Internet connection faster than LAN connection?

Either I'm miscalculating something or my network speeds make no sense.

1) Notebook by wifi to internet (speedtest.net): 14 Mb/s ~= 1.7 MB/s

2) Notebook by wifi to router by cable to desktop: 800 KB/s ~= 0.8 MB/s

3) Notebook by cable to router by cable to desktop: 11000 KB/s ~= 10 MB/s

Why would (2) be so much slower than (1)? (2) can vary between 300 KB/s and 1300 KB/s, while the other two don't vary much.

The existing router is a wrt54gl running dd-wrt.

How can I track down the issue and fix it?

Try different cables. Preferably "store bought," known good cables, in good condition( I.e., not chewed, twisted, tightly bent, stretched, crushed, walked on, rolled over, or with any portion of any pair exposed beyond the jacket anywhere, including the ends entering the connector.

I just ran some tests copying back and forth:

the speed desktop (cable) - router - (wifi) laptop was about 1.5 MB/s
the speed laptop (wifi) - router - (cable) desktop was under 0.5 MB/s

Why the asymmetry?

The cable between the desktop and router would not seem to account for the difference. Also, that cable seems fine.
