I share internet with 2 other housemates. Both of them download all the time, one of then uses netlimiter and therefore doesn't abuse his internet connection. The other one just let's it fly and brings the internet to a crawl. I routinely just unlpug his network cable and wait for him to come in and complain. I think I'm in the right but am just wondering everyones thoughts on internet abusers.

if you pay equal amounts per month, you get equal amount of bandwidth. Netlimiter is certainly the way to go.

totally.
if he thinks it's unfair to not be able to rape the connection with 2 other people who need to use it, then he's got another thing coming!

What he said. I share the connection with 3 room mates but none of us is downloading insane amounts so it hasn't been an issue yet. Fortunately we not not BT either as the upload will certainly kill the connection.
I have yet to try Netlimiter. Is that supposed to be installed on each computer?

Does he use the connection constantly, like 24/7? If so it might be better if he got his own DSL/Cable.

if he wants to hog it, make him pay for it, either 100% of the bill or at least most of it
split it 60/20/20 and then he can hog it

Make him use netlimiter or teach him how to limit his upload bandwidth. I'm assuming he's participating in some filesharing and that's killing your network.

unplugging his cable seems a bit harsh. I would actually confront him about it and suggest NetLimiter.

Hope the account isn't in your name if he is filesharing. You coulkd find yourself getting sued by RIAA or MPAA for something he is doing with your connection.

Unplugging his network cable is a good way to keep the friction level up, especially since you have to live with this guy. You need to talk to him and get him to use Netlimiter. If he wants to be an ass about it, then you should look into configuring your router to block the ports he uses for filesharing or whatever he's using up bandwidth on.

heh, i think the newest svaensoft(sp?) firmware for linksys WRT54G/S routers allows you to limit by the port.... which would be great sicne you can enforce it. but yeah, make him use netlimiter

the worst is when roommates use p2p, don't limit upload, and you're trying to do some work through ssh :(

Confront him about it. If he doesn't budge, show him this thread and tell him we're all coming to kick his ass now.
