internet conncetion available program?

i am just wondering if there is a basic program that any one knows of that like just runs in the taskbar and shows you if there is an internet connection or not available

i am just wanting something like this because i get annoyed sometimes when i have to open internet explorer and all other things to see if the internet is actually working, and a little icon or something in the taskbar that could tell me if it can reach the internet would be something great

any help would be great thanks
