Internet Browsers: Mozilla is looking pretty good lately

I noticed that they are version 0.99 and have frozen for the 1.0 release that should happen in the next few days.

I use an HP C3700 workstation at work, and so I don't have a lot of choice in browsers. We used Netscape 4.x for a long time, but the later releases started getting really unstable. It was like something went wrong after 4.5. Then I switched to Internet Explorer, and I mostly like it, but I don't like personally conceding the browser wars to Microsoft. So I tried Netscape 6 (which I really disliked) and Mozilla 0.7x (which I liked but it crashed often). I used Opera on my PC but didn't like the ads.

Recently I started using Mozilla again at work and at home and I'm really impressed. It's fast, pretty much the same level of ease of use as IE, it doesn't crash and it renders almost everything perfectly.

The point of this is, if you tried Mozilla a long time ago and gave up, you might want to look at it again because it's gotten a LOT better.

(and no, I'm not in any way affliated with these guys... I was just impressed)

Mozilla kicks ass, I've been using it steadily since 0.9.5 and I can count the times on one hand I've had to start IE. And I've no fear of mozilla spreading viruses for me =)

Tabbed browsing kicks ass.

Mozilla has been my default browser since 0.6.

I don't see how anyone could live without a tabbed interface and the ability to disable (on load) pop-ups ;)

Same thing with right click->Block images from this server, which after a few page loads you've gotten rid of 90% of banners =)

Opera 6 is waaay faster on my box than IE. I only use IE to get M$ updates. Sometimes I compare how pages look on IE and that's when I notice how slow IE is compared to Opera.

I dunno, but right now I have 3 windows open in Opera and it's using 15Mb of RAM and around 0-2% of the CPU.

<< Why not Opera >>

I want to like Opera but it has one big problem from my perspective: it doesn't run on HP-UX (my workstation at work). I like to keep my "address book" and bookmarks synchronized between work and home... so using the same in both places makes life easier.

But on my PC, I have Opera installed and every once in a while I fire it up just because I can. I like it in that it seems fast and stable and does a decent job rendering. I don't like the ads and I wouldn't buy it when there are two alternatives that are just as good (if not better) that are free.

Perhaps you should run an OS with a real scheduler, ditch 9X.

I took the plunge - bought Opera - recently. Wanted to be rid of the ads. Mostly I'm happy with it, and I think they need "encouraging" (money) to keep up the good work. I found a significant difference between 6.0 and 6.01 - better performance and a multiple windows bug fixed. I do wish they would simplify their bookmarks system, and I would like to be able to reduce the amount of menu bar real estate even further. All in all though, pretty good. Recent Mozilla releases are pretty good functionally too, but I like Opera better at this point.
