Internet Browser hijacking - Important stuff to know

Just to let you know, there is a new (new to me anyways) threat out there that hijacks your Internet browser and sets the default page to some nasty sites, or annoying sites, and no matter how many times you reset your homepage to your original web site, it keeps reseting it when you reboot your system.

Spy software does not remove this, nor does antivirus software remove it... I know because I just spent the last week learning how to get rid of this garbage.

That is a great cure, but unfortunately there are sites that design to run only under IE.

Try empty the temp, temporary internet, cookies directory, or try Ad-Aware.

so internet exploits are IE specific? you wouldn't have any of those problems if you used mozilla?

I had this happen to an end user, had the problem researched and repaired in less than 30 minutes.

Yup, the security holes comes through IE's code, not general W3C code.

And if some sites only use IE, then launch IE when you need to browse those sites 1% of the time. The ONLY one that needs IE, off the top of my head, is BuyMusic.

Where would I find Hijack this? Googled it and came up with nothing.

I always get the dumb things. Ad Aware gets rid of them 99% of the time, but I want to prevent them. Running a software to remove them is a pain in the a$$. I guess a non IE browser is one way to do that. I use Mozilla at work but it's way slower than IE. Haven't tried Opera. I also tried putzing around with my security settings in IE but nothing works. Anyone know a way to plug the hole in IE other than using a different browser? What pisses me off is that Microsoft probably purposely put this in. I'm going to try Opera if there's no other way.

No, but Microsoft products are the most common exploited because over 90% of the market share uses it. Gecko (The Mozilla/Netscape rendering engine) has had it's share of exploits, and still does.

When I ran Hijack This, it returns all the running process, but I don't know which ones to close. There are obvious ones that I know it's either systems or I set it to run, but there are others that seems sketchy, either registry run or something else. How do I know which to get rid off?
