I have personnally been useing the Internet Answering Machine from CallWave.com for the past 2+ years. Yes, they did go to a paid service $35/yr but just to get a second phoneline into the house would have cost that. I have had NO PROBLEMS with Callwave.
I like the software solution because it works. My first cpu was at 233Mhz but my current is at 500Mhz. Program works just fine and is not apparently a hog as I have no differences in operations with it running or not. That was true even on the 233Mhz cpu.
With hardware......do not even like to think about it. Windows has enough problems without adding strange hardware to it, trying to find current drivers for the hardware, and then you still have to run software to take advantage of it all.
I will add additional comment here also. I network in house with phoneline. I have been online to internet, downloading to network computer and received phone call thru the internet answering machine which plays a recorded message that caller left with no problems created of decrease in thruput of the download in progress. Excellent software and EXCELLENT price for something that is used daily.

Merry Christmas to ALL
