internet access through a proxy - problems

Ok, maybe someone can figure this one out, cause i'm stumped. I'm trying to share an internet connection across a small network (3 computers). Since we're on a modem pending our ISP fixing our DSL (yeah, like that'll ever happen), I'm using a win98 box with proxy+ or Wingate to share the connection, instead of using our linux rounter box.
So here's the deal. The server computer gets online with no problem, and one computer can access the http proxy with no problem. However, the other computer cannot seem to get a network socket connection. Every TCP/IP and IE proxy setting are the same on the two client computers, but one can access, and one cannot. I've even run a VB script on the solo client to reset all it's network settings, no luck. All the computers are connected via a Linksys switch.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm screwing up here? The problematic client can ping the server machine fine, and shares files on the network neighborhood with no problmes as well, so it's probably not the cable. I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks in advance. 🙂

when u ping URL in the problematic box, can the proxy server
"translate" it into IP? if not, something wrong with the
proxy setting or connectiion.

"Every TCP/IP and IE proxy setting are the same on the two client computers, but one can access, and one cannot." If the IP addresses of the two machines are the same, there will be a conflict. Run ipconfig and assign them addresses in the same range but not identical.

Sorry, I guess I should have said that everything is the same on the two machines except the IP address. The good one is 192.168.1.2, the problematic one is 192.168.1.3 (with the server .1.1).
To janetyan - I can't ping to outside url's, which would lead me to believe there's a problem with the proxt setup. However, that wouldn't explain why one computer can still get through. The DNS info is the same between the two computers as well...
