International VCR Question (please help its a V-day present for MOM)

Hi all,

I wanted to know what kind of specs to look for in a VCR that accept both the US and the European standard for movies. As you know, a VHS tape made in Europe won't play in an American VCR, and vice versa. I want to be able to do the following:

1) Convert American standard movies to European and backwards using the international VCR + my old VCR

2) I want to be able to hook up my Hi-8 Camcorder to that VCR and transfer my home movies directly into European standard.

Any suggestions on brands, prices, features? I want to get this for mom, but I dont want to go broke hehe.

please reply soon..

This is not as easy as you might think.

I can't vouch for the quality, but here is a converter/vcr that may do what you want.

You usually need a worldwide TV along with a worldwide VCR too in order for it to work (without an additional converter) for simple playback. Conversion is a whole nother issue.

Check this out.

This looks like what you want. I don't know about this model but I just bought a Samsung VR9160 and I am extremely impressed with it. It is far better than the Panasonic I originally tried.

The Aiwa looks good, at least pricewise -- I couldnt stomach what Circuit City offered me for $1000 -- and im not sure if the rep understood what I wanted anyway!

So basically... would it work as follows (tell me whether im right or wrong):

1) If I want to record NTSC on a SECAM tape, I just play the NTSC on my regular VCR and record on the Aiwa
2) If I want to record SECAM in NTSC format I play the SECAM tape in the Aiwa, and record NTSC on my regular VCR
3) If I want to dub home videos from my American camcorder onto a SECAM tape... what do I do????

ALSO

What is the difference between these models other than $1000 in price??? They both SEEM to do the same thing....

Thanks guys! I thought about it, and went with the samsung (it was on sale on yahoo for $339). With shipping and TAX (it was in-state purchase, which is good -- i get credit card protection from fraud this way), came out to $403. Aint bad! Cant wait to get it.

THanks again for all your help.
