International shipping on the cheap.

I am trying to find the cheapest way to send a package from the US to Brazil. I have sent packages to several parts of Europe, and Brazil seems very expensive by comparison. Fedex is around $350, others are more. Any tips for cheap international rates?

The package weighs roughly 35 pounds and measures 50" x 16" x 6".

I have been using a "random" address in Rio to calculate shipping:

UNICEF
Private Sector Division
Avenida Rio Branco, 135, 6º andar
20.040-006, Rio de Janeiro, RJ
Brazil

Thanks!

It's probably more expensive than Europe because they ship more often to Europe and therefore have more planes going back and forth.

have you tried any of the other carriers?

USPS.gov

Airmail parcel post, 35 pounts to Brazil, $125, 4-10 days
Global Express EMS, ", $160, 3-5 days

Except you seem to be slightly over the maximum size. Worth looking into.

I just snail mail all my Central/South American parcels, personally. Any way else is just too darn costly. Whoever receives it knows that they'll just have to wait a few weeks.

do you want it to actually arrive at the destination? or just get stuck in customs and then stolen by a corrupt govt. worker?

I mail to SA/CA quite often and have yet to have a single parcel genuinely "missing" (presumebly stolen). I've had some take darn near a month, but they've always gotten there.

Hmmm... I never thought of USPS. And I have had pretty good luck with them, too. I have used them to ship to Europe. You are right. It seems to take a considerable ammount of time. Close to a month to Italy.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Just remember that USPS only handles your package until it departs the US. After that, it's in the hands of various postal organizations.
