International debt.

I'm just wondering if debt crosses national boundries. Say if someone spends until the limit on a U.S. credit card and then leaves never to come back again to say Brazil, would that debt follow them? This has always crossed my mind, never really needed to have it researched. Would it be hard for that person to take out a mortgage in Brazil?

Yes. The US Bill collectors would follow you and abduct you, bringing you back to the US for debtors prison...

That's not what I was thinking about when you said "international debt"

I don't know the answer to your question, but I don't think the debt follows you. Even if it did follow you, as a person who lived in Brazil for a few years, I really doubt they would care. And if they did care, [assumingly] being a semi intelligent american wouldn't struggle much and would get special treatment.
