Hey all,
My girlfriend is going on a one week service trip to the dominican republic and logically she would like to keep in touch with me while she is there. I don't know how international calls work, do you use phone cards or something?

Any advice would be great, thanks

you can just pick up the phone and dial
but that can get expensive,
search the hot deals forums for long distance, then compare the rates to the country you want to call

Go to one of the covenience store and buy a phone card, ask the clerk for more info. How to use it: On the back of the card usually has a 18##*** **** number and a pin. You have to dial that # and it will ask you to enter the pin, then it would state how many min or how much you have remain on the card. Then you can dail 011+(code of the country you are dialing and Dominican Republic code is 1-809)+ City code + the # you trying to call. Done. It's pretty cheap to call South of US. Good luck and read the back of the calling card for instruction

Yeah get a int'l calling card much better than calling from your home phone. The other option which I've done is to get something like Sunrocket or Vonage...their int'l rates are the same or lower for most countries compared to calling cards.
