Internal USB2.0 perepherals

Ya know I was just wondering about something... Given that most boards these days have internal USB connectors and that USB2.0 seems to be quite fast (~60MB/s), any reason why we haven't been seeing more support for internal USB devices say... DVD-ROM drives, burners, etc.? Sure beats the regular IDE cables. A lot thinner and I'm guessing just as fast given the limitations as most drives register as ATA/33.

Because the USB programming model is a huge effort compared to the rather simple and straightforward ATA/ATAPI model. The ribbon cables shall be eliminated by serial ATA.

Exactly! No need to cut performance to avoid cables that one hardly ever sees anyway. 🙂

Not to mention one of the biggest (IMHO) advantage to SATA currently is that it uses small cables for things such as hard drives and soon optical drives. USB was not really designed for use inside the case. That tends to remove a bit of the "easy to add, remove and share" devices thing that USB has going for it. The ease is gone when you have to open the case.

Plus let's not forget that it Shares it's bandwith and is unreliable at times...no need to overload 😉
I have benches that show it will out preform an IDE33 HD on it's own BTA so does Firewire by 1 larger margin
