Internal scan converter vs. outboard scan converter.

I just wanted to let anyone who is interested in knowing, I have the AverKey iMicro outboard (external) scan converter and just set up a system with a A-T-I All-In-Wonder 128 32MB PCI video card (no AGP slot)
and the difference between them is quite noticable. The iMicro, you would think is better because it is a dedicated stand alone unit, but the text and picture was barely readable, no matter what overscan setting I used. The picture with the video out on the A-I-W was amazing compared to the iMicro, with text easily readable. I could read almost all the text except for the very smallest font and the picture was near excellent in comparison. I would compare the iMicro picture to worse than rabbit ears antenna to the A-I-W video output as S-VHS, yes that much of a difference. So if your contemplating one way or the other, here's some advise. I had this hooked up to my Toshiba 27" A50 through the regular RCA video input, I'll have to try the S-VHS out sometime when I can get behind the TV, if I remember correctly the A-I-W has both.

That's interesting. How do DVD's look? On some rigs I've seen, the desktop looks horrible on TV but DVD looks pretty good. I just noticed you don't seem to have a DVD drive.......

I have a Creative Labs Encore 6x with the DXR3 but it's not installed in this system and is giving me problems anyway. Looking to get a Toshiba SD-M1402 to work with the Plextor, reads sub. channel unlike most DVD-ROM drives and can be firmware upgraded to remove region coding. The 6x is also one that doesn't have the region coding in it, but on the system I used the A-I-W, it's just a P 166MMX system I am using for specialty computer in a Video entertainment system for decoding ;-). I tried a VCD in it and it looked fine, but I don't think that processor can handle a DVD drive. I'm thinking about going with the Evergreen Spectra 400 upgrade and trying a DVD-ROM drive in it eventually. It's a black BookPC, a mini desktop all in one. I had some bad sectors develope just after I tested it so I formatted the HD and reinstalled Win98SE and the A-I-W software but lost sound when I tried the VideoCD in it again. Don't know what happened with the built in audio.
