internal modem help please

I just bought a gateway laptop with 56k internal modem.I cannot get it to work.it's a gateway model 4404u.any suggestions please? thanks for any help

Plugged into the phone line? Check that the phone cord is plugged into the correct jack on the back of the computer. There should be two...in (line) and out (phone). You want it plugged into the "in" (line) jack.

Has it ever worked? You may need to install the device drivers for that modem...

Go into my computer==> device manager .. and see if the modem is shown as operational, or if there is a yellow or red flag next to that device, indicating it's not installed properly (i.e .no drivers)

Go into the modem device properties and turn sound up all the way and perform a modem test after plugging into a phone jack. You should hear a dial tone and see if the modem tests ok.
