Internal Hard Drive + IDE to USB converter/HD Case = NO RECOGNITION HELP PLEASE!!!

Hello,
For christmas I picked up a 250GB Western Digital Internal 3.5" Hard Drive. (Hard Drive I also picked up this case and usb/ide converter. Case

Now, I've hooked them up, I have the hard drive set to master on the jumper cables as instructed. Now, My issue is this: I hook it up (says nothing to be installed is needed on xp) and it shows up with the USB/IDE converter and what not and comes up with the found now hardware thing and all that. After a few seconds it says my hardware is installed and ready to use. (plug and play) (NO, i did not use the wizard!) I can click on the icon at the bottom of the screen and it comes up with the "safely remove hardware" thing. The hard drive is listed there. It is also listed correctly along with my computers regular hard drive in my device manager. (it shows both). But the problem is I dont know how to get to it so that I can put data on it. I can go to MY computer and nothing ever shows up....EVER. No new hard drive or device. It all stays the same as it was before I installed It. I know the computer sees it there and it knows what it is, but how do i Get it to show up so that I can access it to back up my laptop files?

If anybody has had or heard of any issues like this before It would be greatly appreciated if you could shine some light on my situation. It a school laptop and I really need t back up some files and what not and i'd love to get this thing working. But as it sits right now, its jsut a expensive paperweight and may well soon make a expensive stress ball (i'll throw it at the wall).

Thank you

ok, that could be it. But, If i cant get anywhere to "see" the hard drive...how do I go about formatting it? I've never done it before. It's probobly a really noob question, but how do u do it?

It's been a while since I did mine but try going to the Control Panel> Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.

See if the drive is listed. If so you should be able to initialize it from there. Once done it will show up under My Computer. That's where mine is. Since it's USB I would have thought it would be under removable storage but it isn't.
