In about 2 weeks I'm going to be upgrading my system. The upgrades worth noting in this case are from a Asus A8V Delux to a DFI NF4 Ultra-D and a EVGA 6600gt to a Sapphire X800GTO2.

My problem is that in order to successfully upgrade I need to flash my 4 Maxtor 300gb Sata Drives to a new firmware because of some issues they have with the nf4 chipset. (huge post on it on dfi-street link). I'm also planning on unlocking the 4 extra pipes on the gto2.

My problem is that I do not have a floppy drive. My first thought was to buy an external one, since I really would like to avoid buying one. But... It seems that the firmware files for the maxtors are automatically extracted from the exe to the A: directory, which an external could not be named to... I think. I don't have the firmware just yet, but I will soon enough. I know that I can boot with first priority being a usb device, so I was wondering if I could actually do this with an external floppy.

As for flashing the Sapphire, I think I can do it using DRDOS and flashing it from files on my hd. I guess my main issue is really the maxtors.

On another note... is there ANY reason at all this external floppy won't work on a non dell? Link

They seem to have several different external floppies all ranging in price depending on the system... and I'm not sure if they're just selling the same floppy at different prices or something else.

That's not the issue here... I'd rather not get one. It wouldn't match my case (black plastic on anodized aluminum = ew). I'm curious on ALTERNATIVES to an internal... as the title states.

Not to me... that's why I got the matching drive bezels... you can argue your point but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking for an alternative to it.

Just get an internal and hang it off the side for the flash, then stick it in a drawer till the next time you need it. Why bother installing it?

I was thinking of doing something like that, but it feels like a usb floppy could work as well... I guess I should buy one and see.
