Internal card reader that only shows up if card is inserted

Usually when you get one of those internal card readers, you end up with 4 more drives in your My Computer (or whatever for your OS). On my laptop, no drive shows up until you insert a card into the slot. I'm looking for the same thing for my desktop. Any suggestions on which ones will do this?

My HP laptop is the same. The card reader doesn't show up in My Computer until a card is inserted. I've tried so many different card readers on my desktop and none of them are like that. The drivers for my HP laptop's card reader say "Ricoh 5-in-1 Card Reader Host Controller and Driver".

You can always stop the reader with the USB tray tool - even an internal reader on a desktop is connected to a USB port and looks external. The integrated reader in some laptops can be handled differently, but in desktops they have to be handled like any other USB storage device. Sorry.

I disagree. The device could get power from the USB, but not be "connected". When the device sees a card has been inserted it could "connect" itself. I see no reason no reason why a simple USB reader could not incorporate such a feature.

No money in the Flash card reader market for custom design - almost all use reference PCB/firmware/software from chip makers.
