Intermittent Wireless--tried 3 different wireless access points

ok, i'm going to apologize upfront for being a networking novice, but this one really has me stumped.

we have a wired network in my home. netgear wired router with cat 5e running through the house. we want to have a wireless access point in the center of the house for the kids to be able to use with their laptops.

i've tried three different wap's and get the same hit-or-miss results (linksys wap54g, netgear and a dlink portable wap). basically we will get an occaisonal strong signal, but most of the time the wap doesn't even show up on the network. when we plug a cable from that point on the network into our laptops we get perfect and continuous connectivity. i'm trying to eliminate the simple possibilities which is why i've tried multiple wap's...also why i've tried to see if a rat chewed through our somewhere under the house, but when we use a wired connection from that node we don't have a connectivity problem.

so i'm stumped, anyone have an idea of why i can connect via wire from that point on the network, but when i use a wap i get an occaisonal perfect signal, otherwise zero?

thanks in advance, i'm sure i'm missing something easy but can't figure out what that might be.

Did you configure the Access Point core IP to be of the same Subnet of the main Router.

Did you disable DHCP (if there is One on the AP)?

Did you set an SSID and switch the broadcast On?

Did you try first with Wireless Security Off?

Read the sticky. Not being able to "see" the SSID could be you aren't broadcasting it to you have a very noisy environment or have other 2.4 Ghz sources near the AP, or antenna positioning/not connected.

i don't think it's a hardware issue as i've tried 3 different wap's, and on the wire the connection works perfectly. maybe as you mention it is a configuration issue. i will go to the netgear website and figure out how to reconfigure it, maybe that's the ticket. thanks and i'll let you know what happens! as for interference, etc, there is a 5.8 phone around but that's it...and we're not talking about a weak signal, we're talking about zero signal (the wireless doesn't even show up) with a laptop that's 6 inches from the wap....

hopefully the netgear website goes into config options.

In that case check the antenna connections on the laptop as well as driver. Also being that close is a no-no, you're too close to the APs antennas. 10 feet away would be better.

Also make sure you pick one and only one - use windows zero config or the wireless card utility. They can "fight" over each other and you'll need to disable windows zero config services to use the client utility (which, IMHO is vastly superior)

i'll give some of these a go, but was unable to load new firmware onto the netgear wgr614 v7 wap. pc didn't recognize the format of the netgear software. also we've used multiple laptops and all evidence the same issue...so most likely it's a config problem, i just need to figure out how to reconfigure the wap to work consistently. since our netgear is a no go, i'm on to linksys.

wgr614 v7 is Not a stand alone Access Point (WAP) it is a Wireless Router.

If you have already a Router on the network the WGR has to be configured like this.

tried hooking up the wap54g to two of our network ports...when you turn it on it is supposed to associate with a client using its internal secure easy setup, with the light on the logo flashing white and then staying white. in my case, the wap is unable to associate with a client so the light turns orange. tried resetting a couple of times as well, makes no difference. i don't know how to get this configured, might have to get someone to come over which would be a bummer. as i said, i'm a network novice. i can't get the wap to its own ip address to set it up, won't connect.

Well, the only way to Un-Novice yourself is to start reading and gaining some knowledge.

It is hard to help you since you do not really following Networking debugging routes. Just stating that it is not working and looking at flashing light is Not enough info to find what is wrong.

Maybe this can Help.

understood. i'm going to spend some time trying to figure out what is wrong tonight, obviously trying to reset the wap54g isn't working.
