Background info:
I currently have a D-Link DI614+ wireless router. I am currently using two wireless cards, a Linksys WPC11 and a rebadged Orinoco Gold. I had the same problem with a DLink DWL1000AP accesspoint connected to a Netgear RT314 router. However, upon moving the router/ap to my girlfriend's house, they worked just fine. I'm using two laptops, one with Win2K and one with WinXP.
Problem:
It seems like the wireless connection goes on and off randomly. The Linksys is about 50/50 while the Orinoco is a little better at about 70/30. The wireless connection seems to work fine for small bandwidth applications that don't require a long data transfer process, e.g. checking email and light websurfing. But the connection konks out as soon as i try loading a somewhat graphic intensive page or a file larger than 500 KB. It will go from an excellent 80-100% link quality to no connection at all. Then 5-10 seconds later it comes back.
Since the router/ap combo seems to work fine in a different house, I am lead to believe it's something in my house that's culprit. The symptoms I described happen even when the wireless card is right next to the wireless router, so it has nothing to do with going through walls or floors. It's not a WinXP issue because the same thing happens on both XP and 2K. I thought it might be the 2.4GHz phone in the room next to the wireless router so I got rid of it, but the problem didn't go away. We've got a microwave, but it's nowhere near the wireless router it's not like someone's constantly cooking something. So I've got no clue what could be wrong. Please help. Any assistance or insight is appreciated.
