intermittent system freezes

Twice recently I've had my windows 2000 system freeze (no bsod - had to power off), with the second HD (primary slave) activity light on. This is with 2 different HDs in that spot too. No damage to the disks (yet). The way it froze in both cases was that I heard some strange HD noises (on the WD, the click of death, and on the maxtor a different sound I had never heard before), then I went to windows explorer to see if I could access the drive and that's when windows froze

Could this be a bad motherboard (asus p4pe had since january) or failing onboard IDE controller?

Is there a way to test for that?
