Ok, after getting a virus last week (paladin) and reinstalling XP64 again, chasing intermittent issues all week, and assuming it was my fault, last nite the latest issue finally reared its ugly head.

My hardware :

Abit P35 Motherboard
Intel Q9450 CPU (stock clock)
4Gb DDR2 @800
74Gb Raptor
400 Gb WD data drive
Palit 8800GT OC 1Gb

System has been pretty flawless for almost 2 years now, the double post shows up once in a while from the Abit board, not been annoying enough to warrant any major action.

All week while playing DDO, the computer has been crashing the client, and occasionally powering off, after the power cycle computer runs for another few hours, until I go to bed.

Last nite it finally failed in a fairly spectacular mode, the CPU was running @98 degrees according to the PC Health status in the BIOS, highest power down setting was 90. I pulled the stock intel fan off, cleaned the stock intel compound off and applied Microcenter's version of AS5, CPU was very hot to the touch, but not enough to burn skin, the MB would not stop reporting a temp of 98. I disabled the power off feature, deciding that its time to be done with this :)

So ... today rolls around and I've got a decision to make, I can go cheap and just grab the 9550, or ... and this is where you guys come in, I can go I7.

I'm thinking all of the cheapest comonents they have in stock look pretty good to me,

the i7920 at $199
Corsair 6Gb kit for $169-30mir
http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0311100
and the EVGA Sli X58 Motherboard for $199
http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0312963

I'm headed to the Madison Heights store after work to either replace my cpu, with maybe a better cooler, or resurrect my old ElCheapo water unit, or to RMA the old chip and go with a semi-new build.

Are there any improvements on the above choices?

I forget the exact model of my power supply, but it's one I paid ~100 for and is rated over 650W

There has to be something wrong with sensors, or the mounting. I have NEVER heard of a CPU going bad by getting "hot". And it sure is rare for bios to all of a sudden go bad, but that is worth a shot.

I still say double-check the mounting.

I reinstalled XP64 which was never well supported for drivers, but the temp I saw was in the BIOS screen, which should not be related to drivers ...

Maybe I'll put the watercooler back on and see what the temp actually gets measured at instead of trusting the mobo.

I had this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103006

but removed it because it was too loud, and I wasn't really overclocking like I thought I would.

Oh, and the computer has been on pretty much 24/7 since installed around 3 years ago (when Microcenter ran their first $199 q9450)

The motherboard sounds like the issue, plus that itch to upgrade you've got. I'd fix what you have and wait, but that's just being logical!

I believe my brothers IP35 did the same thing when he ran an E5200. He just disabled the temp shutdown and ran that system for a while longer before upgrading.

I'm sorry for not responding, needed to check, I do in fact have 17 loaded, but my board is a ip35-e, not sure if it makes a difference or not. The first link you posted is amazing though, thanks ... I could not come up with that using any search engine when I was looking for drivers last time.

The liquid cooler is installed, cpu's running at 72 right now, we'll see what happens when I start gaming again tomorrow. I think maybe I can get away with just throwing the junk e4300 I have into a new case with this abit board, getting a new MB, and buying a bit of time ... 6 months always helps with computers :)

I know it's kinda late, but I would be careful putting a new CPU in that existing board. Do you have something cheaper in the S775 line, like an E4300, or access to one from someone, that you could try in the socket to see how it behaves first? What I wold recommend is getting the cheapest supported S775 chip you can as a tester along with the Q9550. You might have to replace the mobo. that ABIT is kinda old and ABIT no longer exists as a company. I really think it's time for a board swap in any case - so maybe going i7 is the way. If you have to buy a new CPU and a new board then I think you should just go i7.

It's been running fine all weekend, the water's alot noisier, but at least I can direct my cash towards something that will actually show improvement right now. I can probably accomplish roughly the same by just overclocking the CPU as I would upgrading (for what I do anyway). A new video card and OS will make a much bigger difference. I am going to try that new bios zagood, it certainly cant hurt.

Oh, after it was 72F, the overheat was 98C, even while gaming it only got up to ~27C on water, and the bios still reports 98, alarms are just disabled since the water will take care of it now.
