Intermittent internet outages

Hello,

I came seeking assistance with a certain problem of mine. I have Time Warner Road Runner Cable Internet. I am running Windows 7. My modem is running into a Cisco wireless G router.

Whenever I am on the computer, it seems that every 30 minutes or so the wireless internet connection will show connected to the router, but no internet throughput being put over the connection. I simply go out to the modem in my garage, unplug and plug it right back in, and the throughput comes back.

I've checked all the physical connections so I don't think that's the problem. What is stranger is that this is a recent development. I've had the internet connection for about three months, but this has started happening in the last month.

Assuming all hardware is ok, what could be the problem?

Thank you.

Check Cisco for a BIOS update on the router. Read the notes about the problems any update is supposed to resolve. If that doesn't fix it, contact both Cisco and Time Warner's tech support. They may be able to give you some custom or updated settings to resolve the problem.

Good luck. :)

If updating the Router's firmware did not help.

In case of Wireless this can be caused by the Wireless card Power saving.

Uncheck the Network Card's Power Saving (I.e., do not let the card save power).
There might be some variations on where the Power saving setting is.
Here are few examples, YMMV, look around in your systems.

It doesn't seem to be at the router level ... the problem fixes itself when i unplug and plug in the modem power.

Same suggestion -- Check the modem manufacturer's site for BIOS updates, and contact their tech support if that doesn't resolve the problem.

Is it your router, or TW's? If theirs swap it out with a new one.

that is typical docsis retraining. D3 modems had bad implementation in the beginning and still do- if one of 4 locked downstreams went out - you had to retrain all 5 (4 down 1 up) which takes alot more time than the D2 modems which are one down and one up.

The headend does log this - but our comcast folks "Forget" to pay the bill for the monitoring software at the headend so they don't notice the whole neighborhood going out at once over and over and over all day long. last time it was a major tap with water getting into it after storm damage. gotta love above ground wiring.
