Intermittent boot and other problems (loosing mind)

Problem:
WinXP pro was running real solid on my system for a couple of days. No problems. I installed a couple of programs and changed some users and configured IIS. I reboot and it POSTs and then black screen no activity. I reboot and it gets to chkdsk (had configured that too). Finsihes and then hangs. I try to boot to safe mode. Nothing. I try to reset to last known good. I tried repairing XP and then got a STOP unknown error c000021a. I install a parallel copy of xp and it boots into it without fail. I copy all my stuff off and then wipe and reinstall everything. Seems ok for a while and then starts having boot problems again. I have to double boot sometimes to make it work. This is from warm or cold boot too!

The plot thickens. I am now starting to find index and security descriptor errors in Norton Disk Doctor. When I "fix" them, my default login looses the password. The computer has started to auto reboot when trying to get into safe mode with networking when I have to reboot. It is still REAL intermittent. Sometimes it comes up like a champ, other times it comes up after two reboots. I am not getting any lockups or error screens while running the OS. It runs perfectly.

Known good:
All drivers are from Microsoft and current based on what the manufacturers sites say.
The p.s. supply voltages are 3.349 and 4.972.
My CPU temp is pretty consistent between 35 and 40.
I've disabled all hardware in BIOS, played with BIOS settings, removed CD/floppy, changed memory, used different video cards.
The hard drive performed without fail in another machine for months.

My suspects:
IIS, security, motherboard

Here is the gear:
ECS K7S5A
Athlon 1G (200)
(2) Crucial 256 DDR CAS2.5
ATI Xpert 2000
IBM 60GXP
LiteOn CD-ROM
Enermax 300W p.s.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Don't know if I can help, but i'll try ;-). I've had some frustrating similar problems.

Some random questions, first:
What version of Norton (i just want to make sure that it likes XP; if it's older than perhaps those errors it's catching aren't errors?)
Do you have all the service pack and compatibility updates from Windows Update? They're worth it.

Also, I'd pull the network card for a while and see if that fixes things. The "safe mode w/networking" problem is suspicious...

hope that helps a bit. post if you've tried all that.

Thanks for responding.

I have NU 2002 and NAV 2002 installed. All software is XP compatible, EXCEPT, hmmmmmm........ I did install SQL server 2000 on there. After Enterprise version said it wouldn't install on the XP OS, I installed Developer version. It appears to be working fine though. No database errors or corrupt data. I can connect to it fine.

Also, all drivers are updated, all software service packs installed and XP updated.

I am ready to give 2000 Advanced Server a shot. I was hoping someone would say that there was a documented problem with the mother board and that I could replace it and be done, but doubting it.

haven't heard of any probs with that motherboard 🙁. It's always worth it to try a different board if you have the spare and the time, but i'm not sure. does your event viewer give you any failure information in the system or application logs?

What's the version on your "Bios" chip on the board? 1.0? 1.1? and what Bios revision are you using ? Date of 10/24/01 or which?

Built in Sound or other?

I have this board and have not had any trouble, my buddy has a newer revision and has had lots of trouble.

Well, I finally got my problem resolved.

I tried swapping every component that I could, except for the motherboard and power supply. I was 2 minutes away from ordering a mother board when I decided to swap the power supply. When that did not change my problem, I decided that since I was going to lose my install of xpwhen I replaced the mother board anyway , that I would install win2k and see what happened.

Well, no reboot problems any more. I am now convinced that my problem was in installing the developer version of SQL server on Windows XP. It would run fine for a week, but if I rebooted, it took an act of God to bring it back up.

Hmmmm.....maybe there really was a reason the regular version of SQL Server balked at installing on XP.
