i sell Martha Stewart paint at work, as well as Dutch boy. Both are Sherman Williams brand paints. I'd recommend either without feeling guilty as they really are great paints. I've personally used Martha, Dutch Boy, and Behr, and all three are excellent brands. The first two can be found at Kmart, and Behr can be bought at Home Depot.

Any opinions on Dutch Boy? I saw a commercial for them today, they have a new plastic container with a pour spout and a twist-on top. Seems like it'd be much better than their current design. They're having a deal on it to introduce it, buy two cans get one free.

yeah those plastic jugs look like a design winner... but how's the paint for the price, don't know. buy 2 get 1 free? direct promotion from them that stores have to follow?

I used Dutch Boy for a client a few months back. It covered well - 2 coats were applied. Don't get too excited over the plastic container from Dutch Boy - I think it's kind of a gimmick. Home Depot sells a plastic attachment for gallons that allows you to pour the paint easier. The cost is $.69 for this item.

Most paint is pretty good nowadays. The reference to Wal-Mart paint being made by Valspar kind of surpised me. The last I'd heard, it was made by Sherwin Williams.

Consumer Reports says Behr (Home Depot Brand) and American Tradiitions (Lowes Brand) are the best. I have used both and tend to prefer the American Traditions which is actually Valspar. The AT covers really good. Most of the time I could have gotten away with just one coat but did 2 anyhow. Benjamin Moore is pretty good too but I actually still prefer the AT over it.

how was the BM rated in CReports?

Sears Easy Living paint goes on sale several times during the year. It is always high quality, one coat coverage. I don't know who makes it for Sears, but it is the best you can get for a low price.

my sears is going to have their paint for 12.99 ea, 3 bucks off they state... is that good or it's a typical kind of sale...

Yes you use same paint on ceilings as you use on walls, prep was just what badmouse said. Now if there is new sheetrock you will need to prime, use Kelly Moore PVA primer, as for the other walls when I think they will need 2 coat I do prime them and have the primer tinted to the same color as the paint, the reason I do that is so you have one coat of primer and one coat of paint and by tinting the prime you know the paint will cover in one coat. Also primer is cheaper then the paint so you will save money.

hey renob, you 'tint' a can of primer by having the store add a drop of the wall color you're doing?

well what if i take your advice and insist on buying kelly moore brand pva primer , but i've chosen BenMoore for the actual paint, can I 'tint' the primer can myself... what proportions?

No that wouldn't work. Either tint the primer a similar color, or asked the store to use the Benjamin Moore tint in it.
