to prevent your floor from being scratched or for looks?
why put a rug under the table? doesn't that defeat getting hardwood floor in the first place?

The primary purpose of an area rug, like one under a dining table, is to help define a space. This is especially important in open floor plans where furniture can feel like its floating in a big room. Secondarily, they help to reduce the wear of chairs moving against the surface of the wood. Lastly, from a purely aesthetic perspective, they help to accent your table by visually separating it from the floor on which it stands.

"Regular" kings are wider, but not as long. They are almost a perfect square. California kings are more rectangular in shape.
