In trying to see what might be a suitable solution to AOL dropping Kaspersky, I came across this link which provides a 6-month trial for the Kaspersky Internet Security suite... yup, the whole suite, not just antivirus.

I'm thinking for the time being, this is about as good as it's going to get now that AVS is dead.

Kaspersky 7.0 Internet Security (for use with up to 3 computers) | FREE after 2 MiRs (one is a competitive upgrade rebate)

Alternatively, there is:

AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
  • Free to home users
  • Instructions on how to disable the popup
  • Using about 7mb of memory right now on my system (real-time protection is enabled) and you will never notice that it is on unless it detects a virus
  • AntiVir has one of the highest (if not the highest) detection rates in the industry, far out pacing AVG Free Edition, aVast and clamwin (the other freebies) and rivaling (and sometimes surpassing) Kaspersky. Link to several detection rate tests
