Interesting Windows 7 Wireless mouse lag issue

First off, there is my setup:

  • Intel Core i7 2600k CPU (Stock speeds) [Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus HSF used]
  • Asus P8P67-M Pro B3 Motherboard
  • Corsair Vengeance 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM (have tried with 8GB)
  • Corsair 650W PSU
  • XFX AMD Radeon 6870 1GB Video Card (Stock speeds)
  • OCZ Vertex 2 120GB (25nm NAND) (OS Drive)
  • Western Digital Black 1TB Hard Drive (Data Drive - User Profile folders are symbolic/hard-linked to this HD).
  • Western Digital Green 1.5TB Hard Drive (Data dump/Backup drive)
  • Western Digital 500GB E-SATA Hard Drive (Backup drive)

Periodically, the wireless Microsoft Explorer Mini Mouse I use will lag/lock up randomly. Keyboard works fine during this time.
Doesn't seem to really matter if I'm in Windows doing something minor, playing a game, or in a Virtual Machine (VMWare Workstation), but it DOES occur more often when something is loading (webpage, an application, file opening).

I've tried the following so far:

  • Moving USB wireless receiver from case front USB ports to rear USB 2.0 ports (and USB 3.0 ports).
  • Removed RAM (down to 8GB). This didn't help, but did find out I had defective RAM, and it has been replaced (Same Make/Model).
  • Tried a different MS Explorer Mini mouse.
  • Reset BIOS to default, and put the settings into the most stock/'safe' mode.
  • Swapped out motherboard with a Gigabyte Z68 mATX board.
  • Error checked the SSD, and both internal hard drives for issues. Nothing found.
  • Don't have a wired mouse to test with at the moment

Other than a Windows 7 re-install, or a motherboard RMA (perhaps a complete driver blow-out/re-install?), can anyone recommend anything else to try?

UPDATE #1:
Running Prime95 x64 Torture Test on the CPU in 'Small FFT' or 'In-Place Large FFT' and it lags almost immediately.
Might just be that the CPU is throttling? (I'm updating the system config to show HSF used). HSF was such a PITA to put on the board, and this was the same HSF I used on the Gigabyte board when it exhibited the same issue. Never noticed this issue on the Intel Stock HSF now that I think about it.

UPDATE #2:
Removed most USB devices via Device Manager.
Rebooted and plugged the wireless tranceiver into all available USB ports.
The 2 front case USB ports are problem-free. The 2 onboard USB 3.0 and 2 remaining onboard 2.0 USB ports cause lagging quite often, sometime immediately when doing ANYTHING.

That is pretty odd. Frankly the front-vs-back ports thing would seem to indicate a range (or interference?) issue. Have you tried connecting the USB adapter to a USB extension cable sitting on your desk, preferably in front of your mousepad? Technically you have a "laptop" mouse and in some cases I've found their transmission strength and range to be piss-poor. Worth a try.

Hi,

I just want to say thanks for the advice about the lagging issues and the wireless mouse. I was thinking I needed to get a new mouse because on my laptop to mouse is fine, but when I use my tv as an extended desktop the mouse lagged bad. Then when I saw that the possibility of interference could be an issue I remembered that I had an extension usb port that came with my Logitech K800 wireless keyboard. I am using the Microsoft Wireless 3500 or 4000 mouse (something like that) but both were plugged into the usb ports on the laptop. Once I remembered this and plugged that extension in and connected the keyboard adapter I instantly have a mouse that reacts as it should without any lag. Hope this helps and thanks for the tip.

Could be a frequency interference problem. Some wireless mice have a slide switch to a different frequency.
