Interesting thoughts on Core i7 and video encoding

Dark_Shikari, one of the lead x264 developers posted a very interesting article in his blog on why Core i7 is so much faster than Penryn for x264 encoding. Apparently the clock-per-clock speedup is about 40% now that he's optimized to take advantage of the improvements.

i7 is absolutely a huge step forward from core 2 in terms of multithreaded power like the encoding you mentioned,but people tend to ignore that cause it's not optimized for what "they" do.

"they" Would be the mainstream user in this case, since most people upgrade the hell out of their systems for gaming, and i7 offers almost no benefits in that sense, even though it's being advertised as such.

Funny, I have not seen the i7 advertised at all for gaming...unless you count the FUD that Alienware puts in their ads. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

And i7s have no problem with games. Its the fastest chip on the market, and will be for at least the next 12 months.

I think most gamers know that they should be far more concerned about the performance of their GPU than their CPU.

"Upgrading the hell out of systems" is far, far from mainstream.

That's right,but anyways i7 is still the better option even for gaming,I mean you dont lose anything compared to core 2 while adding an extra GPU or two for sli/crossfire will result in much better score.So only thing that actually those people keep arguing about i7 is rather the extra $200 or so rather than performance,since "they" are usually the ones that are not financially independent which i7 maybe the perfect excuse for them to bash on to make themselves feel better for not having one,it's human nature Vs Guilt psychologically
