Interesting read on Engine Management

I though some of you might enjoy this...and I know there are a few DSM owners here.

Article mainly talks about how a car ECU works in terms of delivering fuel and adjusting timing. IT also discusses open-loop and closed loop systems. It's pretty general and easy to understand. Doesn't go into to many details, but lets you understand how it works.

Hope you guys enjoy.

There's a huge amount of good info on the DSM lists. I wish all enthusiast sites were so knowledgeable.

oh ya. I remember reading some stuff on turbocharging on a DSM site. They really have a big resource pool, probably more than any other enthusiast group. Well I guess they need the support when their cranks always take a walk. 😛 j/k

But seriously, lots of good info base there.

Speaking of cool stuff, a Maxima guy put in a 2000 Maxima VQ30DE into his RX7. Used a 6-speed 350Z tranny and custom driveshafts and stuff. Very cool.

The VQ long block (with pulleys/alternator/starter/..) only weighs 187lbs. That's right...187lbs. He even had a pic of him and his brother lifting the engine.

Wow, not bad at all. I wonder how much it is fully dressed. Lots of talk about engine weights (and size, of course) over on Lotus Elise forums. Everyone trying to figure out what can be swapped in.

Fully dressed, weights, though I think the honda lumps are without the exhaust manifolds:

Engine Code From Weight (lbs)
-----------------------------------------
K20A:_______RSX Type-R____275
F20A:________S2000________281 (don't know if this is diff from the F20C)
Rover K Series:_OG Elise_____189
Rover K VVTA:_Elise 111S____206 ? unofficial based on the head weight delta
2ZZ-GE:______Celica GTS____246 (Toyota headers and intake)
Renesis:_______RX8_________275

This is the thread about the VQ RX7

Here's what he says about the weight, I guess I was parially wrong about some details.

The motor I have Weighs aprox 178 lbs. That's engine, intake, water pump, exhaust manifolds, T/B, wiring harness, Did NOT have the starter, alternator, motor mounts, flywheel or clutch.

So there was no starter or alternator. However he said the 6-spd tranny was heavy.

personally I think the VQ is a perfect motor to swap into a small RWD car. I've been dreaming of putting in a VQ30DET (RWD spec) into a 240SX. They are very light (all aluminum), high revving (one guy is revving his VQ30 to 8k rpms on stock valvetrain--I question its reliability though), and have a flat torque curve.

Makes perfect sense for a small car.

Imagine the VQ in an Elise!!!

I guess no one else here cares about engine management or cool behind-the-scenes car stuff.

It's sad, although if I posted a thread saying that car A has a massive spoiler and makes a gazillion horsepower and is faster than car B, I'd start a 10-page thread. Or that the interior from car C is more plasticy than car D.
